Is Motor Insurance Mandatory in Ghana?

It is stated under Section 3 of the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Act, 1958 (Act 42) that every motor vehicle in use must have a valid Third-Party Insurance. Driving without it is an offence under Ghanaian law.

Can I reduce the value of my car to enable me to pay a lower insurance premium?

No.
Understating the value of your car will result in underinsurance and will affect your claim in the long run. This means, should you have a claim, you will receive a reduced claim settlement and corresponding penalty if the insurance company deems it fit.

If I should get involved in an accident, who do I contact?

Your safety comes first. If anyone is injured, seek medical assistance immediately.

Ensure the following:

  • Don’t panic.
  • Ensure safety.
  • Document the scene.
  • Get information (names, phone numbers, insurance details, and registration number).
  • Report and notify your Defyn Insurance Advisor.
Are passengers covered under motor insurance?

Yes.
All Passengers are treated as third parties under the insurance cover regardless of the policy type.

What is a No-Claim Discount (NCD)?

A No-Claim Bonus (NCB) is a reward in the form of a premium discount for every claim-free year. The longer you maintain a claim-free record, the greater the discount you may receive, subject to your insurer’s terms.

What happens if another licensed driver is driving my car and is involved in an accident?

Coverage depends on the driver’s authorization and compliance with the policy requirements.

Life Insurance

At what age can I get life insurance?

You must have attained the legal age of 18 years or more and be of sound mind. You must also meet the entry age requirement of the specific policy,

How much does life insurance cost?

Life insurance premiums vary from individual risk presented at inception. The cost depends on factors such as your age, type of policy, the level of coverage.

What does life insurance cover?

Coverage varies by policy, with the basic cover as death and may also include Permanent disability, Critical illness and other optional benefits.

Who can be covered under a life insurance policy?

Depending on the policy, coverage may include the policyholder, spouse, children, adult dependents, or other eligible dependents (anyone that the policyholder has a financial obligation towards).

How long does it take for a claim to be paid?

Claim is paid within 5 working days, this depends on the policy holder if he’s able to supply the documents asked on time.

What documents are needed to make a claim?

The required documents depend on the type of claim but commonly include a completed claim form, a valid ID, medical reports (if applicable), and a death certificate for death claims.

Does one need insurance if you have other guaranteed investment.

Insurance is designed to provide financial security and peace of mind by helping you manage risks that savings and investments alone may not cover.

Group Life Insurance

Can I be part of two or more separate policies with the same company since I belong to several Alumni groups?

Life insurance is a benefit policy; therefore, the principle of indemnity does not apply. As long as you can afford the premiums, you are eligible to hold multiple life insurance policies.

How long do we need to sign up before we can claim?

The waiting period may be zero (0) days or up to one (1) month, depending on whether the policy is an Alumni or Yiedie policy, respectively. Funds will be credited to the designated account within eight (8) working days after all required documents have been submitted.

What if both parents are already deceased?

A member may nominate any individual in whom they have an insurable interest, for whom they have financial responsibility, provided they can submit the required supporting documents at the time of claim.

Does the policy have one start date for all members?

Yes. Is a group policy the members enjoy equal benefits

Do members living in the diaspora qualify?

Yes, they do. There are no territorial limits on the policy.
